Why Clean Carpets Are Healthy

Dust, pollen, pet dander and other allergens trapped in carpets, draperies and upholstered furniture are one of the leading causes of respiratory distress, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). SERVPRO of Nipomo, smoke damage specialist, has released a list of cleaning tips to help keep allergens, dust and pet odors under control.
Even when pets are housebroken and stay off the furniture, they are like every other member of the family that tracks in dirt, dust, and pollen. Daily coming and going brings allergens on paws and shoes, fur and clothing. Doors and windows opened to the cool breeze, even with screens, let in airborne particles.
Regular cleaning, especially professional deep cleaning, not only removes collected allergens, it preserves the quality and life span of carpets and upholstery and freshens the air. Homes and offices that have been closed up over cold and rainy months can get a little stagnant from lack of fresh air, from dust particles circulated by heating systems, and maybe even a little dampness from tracked-in water and mud.
Emergency cleaning, in the event of smoke being in the house from a fire, or a plumbing problem is even more critical. Smoke damage can happen even if there has been a fire on a neighboring property. Water damage from plumbing issues needs immediate attention to remove mold and other contaminants.
Regular vacuuming helps keep dust and allergens under control. Even spot shampooing and home treatments to remove pet odors and dirt is helpful. But, to maintain the life of expensive carpeting and furnishings, periodic professional deep cleaning is the way to go.
Tips for keeping carpets, drapes and upholstery clean include:
- Vacuuming at least twice a week. The AAFA recommends vacuuming more often for those who have severe allergies or respiratory conditions.
- Treat spills, stains and tracked-in dirt right away. Spills can soak through the carpet into the pad, or even all the way to the flooring, and cause hard to remove stains, even mold if there is enough long-term moisture. It is especially important to dry the area thoroughly and apply an odor-removing enzyme treatment for pet accidents.
- Install stain resistant carpet if possible and use stain resistant fabric.
- Use area rugs over carpeted high traffic areas such as entryways and hallways. Area rugs also protect carpets from wear.
Remember to be easy with yourself because life happens. Kids and pets have accidents and homes get dirty and dusty. A good annual professional cleaning goes a long way towards keeping your home fresh and preserving your investment in carpets and furnishings.
